"Don't do it Lance, stay in school. You don't want to follow in the foosteps of former NY high school greats who weren't ready for the NBA like Omar Cook, Kenny Satterfield, Erik Barkley, etc.." The list can go on and on naming players who couldn't stick in the NBA because they weren't ready and should of stayed in school. Those were the type of comments Lance Stephenson would hear during his amatuer days. Just like his predecessors, Stephenson gave up years of college eligibility to chase his dream for the NBA. But unlike his predecessors, it appears that he has a legit shot to not only make the team, he also is being penciled in as a significant part of their future. Projected to be a first round pick, Stephenson fell to Indiana in the second round. He played so well in summer league, the Pacers signed him to a multiyear deal Thursday when one-year contracts are more common for second-round picks. Stephenson was the Pacers' second leading scorer in summer league action at 14.8 points per game. With a 73.3 field goal percentage, he was the top shooter among the eight teams in the Orlando, Fla., league. He also averaged 1.5 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 23 minutes per game. At 6'5 220, the Pacers love his upside. They feel he has a great feel for the game, and a NBA body to play multiple positions, including point guard. Stephenson is an underrated talent with star potential. His game is similar to reigning ROY Tyreke Evans. Despite all the doubters and non believers, this highly scutinized kid from Brooklyn now has a home. CourtCred has been watching Stephenson play for years so none of this is a surprise to us. We already knew that he was "Born Ready", now the people of Indiana and the rest of the world will see for themselves.
