| USA Trims Roster | ||||

If you watched the USA Basketball Showcase on Saturday night you walked away knowing two things about the USA team that will be competing for gold at the World Championships in August. The two things are that the US team will be guard heavy and the other is that it will be the most athletic team of the bunch. So far, three guards have been cut from the roster bringing the names on the list to 15 players. OJ Mayo, Gerald Wallace, and Rookie of the Year Tyreke Evans will not be making the trip to New York for the second stint of training camp. Evans was practically doomed when he suffered an ankle injury causing him to miss the last few practices as well as the scrimmage. Mayo might have been a bit of a surprise after his 18 point performance on Saturday night, and the fact that he fits the mold for a guard in international play with his size and shooting ability. Budding center JaVale McGee was also left off of the roster leaving team USA with only Tyson Chandler and Brook Lopez as the only true big men. There is still another cut that has to be made due to the rules stating that you are only allowed a 12 man roster. Coach K and staff have up until the day before he World Championships begin to make the final cut so look for the decision to be made after the exhibition games ending with Greece and Lithuania in Europe have been played. |
